Cholesterol is divided in to two categories. High density lipoproteins are the good cholesterol that your body needs to function. Low density lipoproteins are the bad cholesterol that increases your chance of heart diseases and circulation problems.

1. What does HDL cholesterol do


HDL cholesterol actually helps remove LDL cholesterol from your blood stream. Because of this, having high HDL levels actually decreases your chance of heart disease. They also keep the lining of your blood vessels clean, further protecting you from heart problems. They are also associated with a strong verbal memory, and low HDL levels are shown to increase memory problems.


2. How are HDL and LDL different


HDL is different from LDL because of how dense the molecule is. A much greater portion of HDL cholesterol comes from proteins, while LDL are mostly fatty acids. This makes the HDL cholesterol a much denser molecule compared to LDL.


3. What makes LDL worse than HDL


LDL cholesterol gets stuck on cells while traveling in your blood stream to your liver. There they become oxidized by free radicals and cause damage to the lining of your blood vessels. If too many of them get stuck, it leads to a blockage of your blood vessels and damages their lining. This has the potential to cause a heart attack or stroke.


4. How are HDL levels optimized


Having optimal levels of HDL is indicative of a healthy lifestyle. The best way to increase HDL while decreasing LDL levels in your body is to eat healthy and exercise. Eating more omega fatty acids, increasing your fiber intake and decreasing simple carbohydrates in your diet leads to better levels of HDL.


Not all cholesterol is bad. HDL cholesterol is actually linked to good health. It is the LDL that is unhealthy. Make sure that you know the difference between the two, and limit your LDL levels while increasing your HDL levels. If you do this, you are on your way to optimum health.
