High Cholesterol Foods

High cholesterol affects a large number of people, but they can be avoided if you watch your diet and get plenty of exercise. However, sometimes people don't know which foods to avoid to maintain a healthy level of good cholesterol. Some foods which are high in fat are not considered high cholesterol foods and other foods which can be considered healthy can contribute to high cholesterol.

1. What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is an essential lipid, or fat, that is produced by the liver that is vital for normal body function. Cholesterol helps synthesis Vitamin D from sunlight, it is essential to aiding the body to digest food and fats and it aids in the production of cell membranes and hormones.

2. What Causes High Cholesterol?

When the liver produces cholesterol it is either passed onto cells in the body and utilized by those cells, or it is passed from the cells to the liver to be broken down or passed on as waste. However, if there is too much cholesterol being passed to the cells, or from the cells, and it cannot be utilized, or broken down, it can build-up in the bloodstream. That build-up is called plaque and it can cause arteries to become blocked.

3. How is High Cholesterol Determined?

Your doctor will do a blood test and measure the amount of cholesterol in your blood. If the level is at 200 mgdl or less, your cholesterol is considered normal. If it is 240 mgdl or higher, it is considered high.

4. Which Foods are High in Cholesterol?

Foods that contribute to high cholesterol are foods high in saturated fats such as red meat, whole milk, cheese, eggs (particularly the yolks), duck, hydrogenated vegetable oil, coconut oil, avocados and processed grain foods such as cakes, cookies and pastries. Also, foods high in trans-fatty acids contribute to high cholesterol as well. Trans-fats are prevalent in fried foods due to the oil used to fry these foods. Hydrogenated liquid oils used to preserve food are a source of trans fatty acids. That not only includes fried foods, but commercial baked goods, crackers, and many other snack foods,

5. Are there Some Foods that Combat High Cholesterol?

A diet that includes cold water fatty fish like salmon, tuna and halibut, to name a few, contain omega 3s, which are among foods that lower the LDL or bad cholesterol levels in your blood. Other foods include soybeans or other foods made from soy, nuts, vegetable oils, beans and foods made from whole grains.

Unchecked high cholesterol can lead to strokes and heart disease as it causes the arteries to become narrower as plaque builds up in blood vessels and restricts the flow of blood to your vital organs. It is important to know your cholesterol levels and avoid foods that raise the risks of high cholesterol. Have your doctor check your cholesterol levels and start a regimen to help you reduce those levels if you find out you have high cholesterol.
