You may think lower cholesterol levels is a good thing. That isn't the case when it comes to the good cholesterol, known as HDL. The lower the levels of HDL cholesterol, the worse it is for you health-wise. When trying for a healthy lifestyle, we need to make sure our HDL levels are high and our LDL (the bad cholesterol) levels are low. So, if you have low good cholesterol levels, you shouldn't ignore it.

1. What is HDL Cholesterol?


HDL cholesterol is what is known as the good cholesterol. HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein. These well behaved scavengers travel through the bloodstream, removing all of the bad cholesterol. The higher levels of HDL help prevent the risk of a heart disease, whereas the lower the HDL, the higher the risk. Many believe that cholesterol overall is bad, but that isn't so. Cholesterol actually helps provide stability in each cell of the body.


2. Are Low Levels of HDL Cholesterol Bad?


Low levels of good cholesterol can be bad in the long run. Those with lower levels of HDL are at a higher risk for developing heart disease, and other health risks. Levels at 40 mgdl and below are considered low. Levels at 60 mgdl and above are higher, and better for the body.


3. What can You do to Raise Your HDL Levels?


There are several things you can do to boost your HDL levels. One important way is to eat healthy. Olive oil, nuts and fish are great additions to any diet. Always have the necessary servings of fruits and vegetables. Staying away from junk food, and focusing on nutritional options can really help raise your HDL levels. Exercise is important too. Avoiding obesity helps lower the risk of heart disease, as well as other health issues. It should be part of your daily routine to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise. If you smoke, stop. Smoking greatly reduces HDL, so quitting (or not starting at all) can really help out your good cholesterol.


4. Will You Need Medication?


In certain cases, your doctor may feel that medication will help keep your cholesterol levels where they need to be. Though, if you keep up with a totally healthy lifestyle, medication may not be needed. Statins help lower the LDL cholesterol, and mildly raise HDL levels. Medication isn't always necessary, so talk to your doctor in depth about your options.


Though low levels of the good cholesterol can be bad, it is not set in stone that someone with low levels will have heart disease. Just as someone with higher levels may not be at their healthiest. It is important to get your cholesterol levels checked every five years, unless your doctor feels you need more frequent testing. Always incorporate healthy eating with exercise and refrain from smoking.
