Starting out bodybuilding can be an exciting thing to do but most people get confused and run around like chickens not knowing what to do and how to set goals for long term success. The problem is most people skip doing their short term goals and jump right in. To be successful in life you need to start by setting up a plan first. You need goals for a week, 1month later, 3 months later and then years later which are long term goals.

So what exactly do you need to do before you start bodybuilding and during the first few months.

1 - Visualize your goals

The first thing you should do before you start working out is to visualize what you want to happen. How big do you want to be? Visualizing is a very important step to gaining motivation. Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between real life and imagination. Seeing yourself as already big and powerful will set the goal subconsciously and help you in the long term to continue going until you reach that goal. Keep that image in your head.

2 - Get motivated and set short term goals

After having your visualization nailed down and knowing what you want it’s time to get motivated. Think of why you want to be a bodybuilder or even just lose weight if that is your goal. How happy will this make you? What will you achieve? What will happen if you don’t do this? Once you found your motivation is time to use this energy to set up your goals. Most people jump right into going to gym without setting up a plan and find their motivation running out and then stop. You MUST set goals when you have motivation, it’s not the motivation that will help you achieve success it’s the discipline and habit in the long term.

3 - Change your environment

So now you have your goals set and burning with motivation to start. Before you do that you have to change your environment as to not fall back. Make sure you will have time set aside to go to gym. Adjust your schedule to make sure you have time, rearrange meetings, and recruit a friend to go with you and so on. The next step is to plan your diet. The easiest way is to see a nutritionist to help you plan out a diet. Then you have to get rid of all the junk food in your house and replace these with the foods that you will need for bodybuilding. You will need a well balanced diet, protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats - Foods such as fish, potatoes, vegetables, whole grain foods etc. No more greasy French fries and microwave dinners. Making sure everything is ready for you to start going to gym makes it easy not to cheat and fall back into habit.

4 - Short gym sessions

The time has come and you are ready to gym. In the beginning it’s important to just get used to working out. Take it slow and see what you body is capable of.  You will increase the intensity of your workouts as you proceed.  The most important thing is to set a goal to continue going to gym for at least 2 months without stopping. Managing to do this you will have built the habit to continue going.

5 - Correct Eating

Exercising increasing your body’s metabolism makes you really hungry. You will need to eat correctly to gain any muscle. It’s important to build this habit early on as this is the most difficult thing to learn. Once you master eating for health rather than taste. You will master being a bodybuilder. During exercise your body will need 1 to 1.5 times the protein it needed before, so make sure you get enough.

6 - Resting

Most beginners make the mistake of not resting enough. There is the misconception that bodybuilders spend all day in the gym. This is not true; workout sessions should be no longer than 50 minutes a day. The rest of the time you need to rest in order to grow. Muscles don’t grow in the gym, they grow at home when you rest and eat.
