 Boot Camp of fitness

Sometimes when I'm driving to work really early (or even coming home from a really late night out), I see this group of crazy people down by the river. Doing push ups. At 5:30am! Insanity is the only reasonable explanation. Or maybe: Weightloss?

You've probably heard of this Boot Camp phenomenon. It's been around a few years and is based on the premise that if strict, intense military-style training can work for soldiers, it can work for you too. It started as a fitness thing, but this boot camp mentality has crossed over into many mediums. There's dog boot camp, baby boot camp, you name it. But back to the fitness thing. Doing regimented drills under the watchful eye of a 'Sargent' seems like a cruel and unusual punishment for eating too many Twinkies. It's like a cliched fat camp in a comedy movie. People probably pay a lot of money to be yelled at -- do they like it? Do they hate it? I've never taken a class so I don't know. Have you tried it?

Boot Camp of fitness

Boot camp fitness is also becoming quite specialized too. There's a ton of boot camp DVDs -- do a search for boot camp on Amazon. com and you get 3 pages of boot camp-style workouts from names like Denise Austin and Billy Blanks. You get boot camps for your abs, boot camps for your butt, you name it. But is it as effective in the comfort of your home, where you can simply retire to the sofa if it gets to intense? I think not -- the power of having a person in your face ready to humiliate you should not be underestimated.

I grew up in a military family and got used to listening to authority figures, namely my General Dad. Moreover, I was in best shape in Junior High when my Nazi-esque gym teacher gave us detention whenever we couldn't (or wouldn't) run 2km in 15 minutes. So maybe something like this really would help me pass that impossible threshold from fairly in shape to in awesome shape? What do you think?
