Jump into a fitter you


Remember when you were a kid and the highlight of your day was when you got to jump on the bed at a hotel or your friend's trampoline? Kids have so much energy to burn off, and jumping's a great way to do it -- it's exhausting! And we often forget that we have a lot of energy to burn off too, but it often gets pushed aside during our busy days, only to keep us awake at night when we should be sleeping. Maybe we should try jumping too?


Jump into a fitter you

Laugh all you want -- I'm serious. Jumping is a great new fitness trend that's actually be around for a while. Jump training, also known as Plyometrics, has bee used for decades by athletes, and it's being incorporated into normal people's fitness too. And guess what -- it's fun.


There are a number of ways you can stay fit with a jumping routine, including:


  1. Jumpstyle: Have you heard of jumpstyle before? I hadn't before I started this article, but apparently it's a popular form of dance that originated in Belgium. How do I describe it? Well, at the risk of being chided by Jumpstyle enthusiasts, I think it looks like Riverdance but a little less Celtic and without the costumes. But it's hard to describe so you'll have to watch the clips on YouTube. It looks pretty easy, but then again I've never tried it. And while I don't know exactly how many calories it burns, I suspect it's a lot.
  2. Jump Rope: Jump rope is one of the simplest exercises out there, and yet it's one of the most effective workouts out there. Not only can it improve your strength and balance, it can improve your endurance as well. Jumping rope for an hour will burn about 800 calories, and while you're probably not going to be able to do it for an hour, 10 minutes or so here and there should make a big difference. Why not jump rope while the commercials are running on your favorite TV show? If you'd rather get your work out in all in one go, there are also a number of DVDs you can get to work out to. And Jump Rope is something you can do anywhere as long as you have a few feet of space. Here are some moves to get you going.
  3. Jumping on the Trampoline ... or, dare I say, Bed? A few weeks ago, I visited some relatives and after a refreshing swim in their pool, decided to have a jump on the trampoline with my 10-year-old cousin, Mikey. We played 'crack the egg' and generally goofed around until I stumbled off exhausted. It felt like I'd been there for hours, but in reality, it was about 30 minutes. The point is, jumping is a great workout, especially when you have a soft surface to land on. If you don't have regular access to a trampoline, why not channel your inner kid and make one final effort at rebelling from your parents by jumping on the bed? Though jumping on the bed at your age might be a bit optimistic--make sure you have high ceilings and don't let your kids see you; they'll think mom and pop have gone batty.   4. Ever Pogo'd? Pogo sticks are a thing of childhood -- until now. They're making a comeback and many gyms even have pogo cardio classes. Or, if classes aren't your thing, consider getting a high-performance pogo stick. It might be tough getting the hang of it first, but after a while, you should be a pro. Consider taking your pogo stick to the corner store one evening! You'll look funny but you will sure burn some mad calories.
