 Not your typical aerobics class

Remember those fitness videos from the 80s? The ones that featured headbands, legwarmers, permed hair pulled into a high ponytail and colorful tight tights? Ahhh, aerobics. They've become a cliché for bad 80s trends, but maybe they shouldn't be. Properly defined, aerobics means any sustained exercise that stimulates and strengthens the heart and lungs, thereby improving the body's utilization of oxygen. That is, anything that gets your heart pumping.

Not your typical aerobics class

Aerobics have come a long way from the cheesy music and cheesier movements. Check out the fitness schedule at your local gym and you'll see a variety of Aerobic classes that are influenced by current global fitness trends. The catch is that they might not be called 'Aerobics', but that's exactly what they are.At my gym, they have classes called Cardio Funk, Cardio Kickboxing, Maximum Step -- you guessed it, these are all aerobically-based activities, but with a twist.

Traditional aerobics centered around calisthenic-style exercises like jumping jacks. These types of movements are easy to do, but they get boring fast. One way to liven up the class is by adding some rockin' music and dance moves -- hence the creation of aerobic-style classes that use hip-hop, funk and even jazz moves. For the more daring individual, striptease aerobics are a way to get fit and feel sexy at the same time. Martial arts are extremely popular these days, and the number of aerobic classes that use kickboxing-inspired punches and kicks is testament to that. Step's been around for a while, but it seems like it's constantly changing to incorporate new tunes and new moves.

If you're trying to lose weight, aerobics is a great way to get started because they burn a ton of calories and will leave you huffing and puffing. Aerobic exercises are challenging, but if you're fit enough that they don't knock you on your bum, try adding some resistance to your workout by taking up a circuit training-based class. The best thing about aerobics? They're fun. When I'm in a class, I hardly notice time passing because I'm trying to keep my rhythm. Also, they're a convenient way to workout. Aerobics can be done at home with the help of an exercise video (equipment is often not necessary--just enthusiasm.) Do a search on Amazon for aerobics and you'll generate hundreds of DVDs. Or you can join a class at the gym – there's sure to be one. That's what I do and I love it, plus there's no sitting down for a breather when you've got someone barking orders at you.

I, for one, love my cardio kickboxing class. What kind of aerobics are you into?
