how to get motivated

Motivational problems: who doesn't have them? Nobody is really completely free of them because we all have days where we have to make ourselves get up and get moving. Now for some people getting (and staying) motivated is much worse than for others, and finding what works for you to get you moving can be quite a trick. Have you thought about what works for you? Is it rewarding yourself with something new? Or simply focusing on the satisfaction you get after a good workout?

The thing about motivation is that it's not something that can always be created in the same way -- different days need different inspiration. So even though you may have an idea or two of things that help get you in the mood for exercise, do those couple of things always work? If you're anything like me the answer is no, and what you really need is a whole list of ideas to run through every time you're having an off day because it's really hit and miss as far as what's gonna work and what isn't.

So spend some time and make a nice long list of all the reasons why you want to workout and what you want to get out of it -- about 10 things minimum sounds good, with no maximum of course. Zen habits came up with a list of 31 ways to get motivated to exercise and I think many of them are good ideas for most people. Here's my favorite 10 from their list:

  1. Focus on how good you feel after a good workout. It's a serious natural high!
  2. Read success stories.
  3. Sign up for a class (maybe with a friend?) that sounds fun.
  4. Get a workout buddy.
  5. Focus on how "yucky" you feel when you don't workout
  6. Find and post your favorite motivational quotes (one of mine is "Somebody busier than you is out running right now.")
  7. Make it public by posting your progress on a blog or keeping certain friends and family up to date on a regular basis. You'll want to be able to report good news!
  8. Sign up for a 5k or a triathlon.
  9. Use the scale and the tape measure to keep track of your progress at regular intervals.
  10. Remind yourself of the long and healthy life you want to live.
